Why stainless steel is rust
- Sep 03, 2016 -

When the surface appears brown rust stainless steel tube (dot) when people are surprised: think "stainless steel does not rust, rust is not stainless steel, may be a problem for steel."

In fact, this is a one-sided view of the lack of understanding of stainless steel. Under certain conditions, stainless steel will rust.

Stainless steel with resistance to atmospheric oxidation---that is, no rust, as well as in the presence of acid, alkali, salt corrosion---that is, in the medium corrosion resistance. Its corrosion resistance is the size of the steel chemical composition, and each state change, conditions of use and the type of environmental media.

304 steel pipe, in a clean, dry atmosphere, absolutely excellent corrosion resistance capability, but move it to the coast, contains a lot of salt in sea mist, will soon rust and 316 steel tube is good. So instead of stainless steel of any kind, in any environment, resistant to corrosion and rust.

Stainless steel depends on its surface to form a layer of very thin but strong fine stable of chromium-rich oxide film (protective film), preventing oxygen atoms continue to infiltrate and oxidation, and resistance to corrosion. If for some reason, this film has been the growing destruction of, air or oxygen atoms in the liquid will become increasingly infiltrate or metal iron atoms on the left and forming loose oxide, corrosion of metal surfaces will be kept.
